Cagle's, Inc., will end a production shift at its plant in Pine Mountain Valley, Ga., and eliminate 298 jobs effective on Aug. 19, 2011.

The Company blamed the layoffs on soaring feed costs with prices jumping 34 percent last fall, mainly because of a 75 percent increase in the cost of corn.  The Company added that boneless breast sales also decreased 10 percent compared to last year.

Bluegrass Regional MH-MR Board, Inc., doing business as Bluegrass Regional Mental Health and Mental Retardation, has cut 168 jobs in Somerset, Ky., due to a drop in the number of patients.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems to Lay Off 1,200 Workers

Lockheed Martin's Space Systems Company will lay off 1,200 jobs in Sunnyvale, Calif.; Denver, Colo.; and the Delaware Valley region of Pennsylvania, by the end of 2011.  It is also laying off as many as 95 jobs in Greenbelt, Md., on Sept. 30, 2011.

Space Systems, which currently employs approximately 16,000 employees in 12 states, anticipates that middle management will be reduced by 25 percent, with significantly smaller percentage impacts in other levels and disciplines.

Johnson & Johnson to Eliminate 1,000 jobs in Calif., Ireland and Puerto Rico

Johnson & Johnson will eliminate 1,000 jobs as part of a restructuring.  The Company will shut down factories in Cashel, Ireland, and San German, P.R., and consolidate research and development teams in Fremont, Calif.

The layoffs and closings is part of J&J subsidiary Cordis Corp.'s decision to exit part of the stent business, where it was once a pioneer.  The stent is a tube that can open arteries and restore blood flow, allowing patients to avoid more invasive surgery.

Cleveland Clinic is Closing the Huron Hospital and Lay Off 915 Staff

The Cleveland Clinic will close the Huron Hospital in East Cleveland, Ohio, and terminate 915 jobs between Aug. 15 and Oct. 7, 2011.

The hospital serves patients Cleveland's impoverished east side and suburban East Cleveland, prompting concerns from city officials on the loss of trauma and other emergency care where it was needed the most.

American Electric Power Company Will Close Five Plants and Lay Off 600

The American Electric Power Company, Inc., plans to close five plants in the U.S. and lay off 600 workers, as a result of new rules for coal-fired power plants proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA is proposing strict regulations to limit emissions of mercury, lead and other toxins from coal-fired plants could take effect in 3-1/2 years.  AEP deems the timeline as "unrealistic."  As a result, the company would have to close plants in Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia by the end of 2014 and retire generating units at plants in five states by the end of 2012.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Corp. is phasing out many major space programs in Newtown, Pa., Sunnyvale, Calif., and Denver, Colo., resulting in 1,200 layoffs in those regions.  The Company plans to cut its middle-management staff by one-fourth, and many other areas is expected to have smaller layoffs .
