Central Parking Systems Cuts 254 Jobs in St. Louis

Central Parking System will shut down its location in St. Louis, Mo., and terminate 254 jobs effective on Aug. 31, 2011.  The Company recently lost a parking management contract with Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, in which it received $685,000 a year, plus expenses.

Caribbean Cove Hotel Closing on Oct. 9

The Caribbean Cove Hotel and Water Park plans to shut down operations in Indianapolis, Ind., and lay off 206 employees effective on Oct. 9, 2011.  The owner, General Hotels Corp. plans to sell the hotel to prospective buyers by Sept. 12 due to a weak economy and increased competition.

CareFusion Closing California California Manufacturing Facility

CareFusion Corporation will terminate 270 jobs as it closes its ventilator manufacturing facility in Palm Springs, Calif., in June 2013.  The job cuts are about 2% of its total workforce of 15,000.

CareFusion is closing the plant as it is consolidating production of ventilators at a plant in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Baystate Health Laying Off 354 Staff

Baystate Health plans to eliminate 354 jobs in Springfield, Mass., on Aug. 19, 2011, or about 3.5% of its total workforce.

Baystate and other hospital in Massachusetts are faced with deep cuts in Medicaid, which is responsible for insuring low-income patients.  The health system lost an estimated $26.5 million last year because of underfunding of Medicaid.

Baystate Health is a not-for-profit health care system headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts, serving Western Massachusetts and the Knowledge Corridor Region of Massachusetts and Connecticut.  The system has 4 hospitals, over 80 medical practices, and 25 reference laboratories.  With 10,000 employees including 1,600 physicians, Baystate Health is one of Massachusetts' largest employers.

Amcor Closing Deran Facility and Lay Off 180

Amcor Rigid Plastics will lay off 180 employees as it closes its plant in Delran Township, N.J., by the end of the year. Amcor acquired the facility in 2010 when it bought Ball Corp.’s plastic packaging operations in the Americas.

Omega Healthcare Investors, Inc., will close four skilled nursing & rehabilitation centers in Connecticut and ultimately lay off a total of 575 workers at the facilities. 

The skilled nursing & rehabilitation centers -- Bishops Corner in West Harford, Rocky Hill, Soundview in West Haven and University in New Haven -- have been in state receivership since January.

In April, the Superior Court has previously ordered the skilled nursing & rehabilitation centers shut down due to their poor financial condition.  All four skilled nursing & rehabilitation centers previously belonged to Haven Healthcare, which filed for Chapter 11 on Nov. 20, 2007, after suffering financial problems and repeated citations for deficient patient care.  Judge Albert S. Dabrowski of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Connecticut dismissed the Chapter 11 cases of Haven Healthcare Management LLC and its debtor-affiliates on Aug. 15, 2008.

Omega Healthcare Investors, Inc., is a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) providing financing and capital to the long-term healthcare industry with a particular focus on skilled nursing facilities located in the United States.  At March 31, 2011, the Company owned or held mortgages on 398 skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and other specialty hospitals with approximately 46,172 licensed beds (44,425 available beds) located in 35 states and operated by 50 third-party healthcare operating companies.

Thermo King Closing Georgia Plant and Lay Off 276 Workers

Thermo King Corporation is closing its plant in Louisville, Ga., by the second quarter of 2012, with the loss of 276 jobs.  The plant manufactures refrigeration equipment for the transportation industry, including refrigerated semi-trailers and rail box cars.

Thermo King manufactures transport temperature control and HVAC-Refrigeration systems for trailers, truck bodies, buses, shipping containers, and rail cars.  Produced at about 10 plants in seven countries, the lineup is marketed worldwide through a global dealer network.  In addition to its line of new systems, Thermo King offers used and remanufactured refrigeration units to customers.

State Street Corporation Will Lay Off 850 Staff From I.T. Division

State Street Corporation will cut 850 jobs companywide, including 558 in Massachusetts, as part of a restructuring of its information technology operations.  The layoffs are about 3% of its estimated workforce of 29,000.

State Street in November announced plans to cut 1,400 jobs as part of a plan to generate $625 million in savings by the end of 2014.

Sun-Times Media Closing Printing Plant in Chicago and Lay Off 400 Workers

Sun-Times Media Holdings LLC is closing a printing plant in Chicago, Ill., in Sept. 2011, leaving 400 employees without jobs.

The plant closing and layoffs are part of an agreement in which the Chicago Tribune will print the Chicago Sun-Times and several of its suburban newspapers.  The deal is expected to generate more than $10 million a year for the company.  Sun-Times Media Chairman Jeremy Halbreich said the agreement will allow the company to invest more in editorial content and advertising sales

St. Jude Medical to Lay Off 450 Staff in Sweden

St. Jude Medical, Inc., will cut 450 jobs in Sweden by the end of 2012 because of declining sales of its cardiac rhythm management products.  The layoffs are about 3% of its total workforce of about 15,000.

Premier Bankcard Closes South Dakota Facility and Lay Off 330 Staff

Premier Bankcard has closed its call center in Spearfish, S.D., and laid off 330 staff.  The handled collections and customer service for the Company.  These tasks will be re-distributed among the company's existing locations in Sioux Falls, Dakota Dunes, Watertown and Huron, South Dakota.

W.D. Partlow Developmental Center Closing in Alabama and Laying Off 400 Staff

The W.D. Partlow Developmental Center will close in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in Feb. 2012, with the loss of about 400 jobs.

Navistar Closing Plant in Fort Wayne and Lay Off 1,400

Navistar International Corporation intends to wind down its design and technology center in Fort Wayne, Ind., over the next two to three years, with the loss of 1,400 jobs.  The layoffs are about 9% of its total workforce of 15,800 as of Dec. 31, 2010.

Navistar said that the plant closing is due to the consolidation of operations to Lisle, Ill.

Memorial Health to Lay off 228 Workers in Georgia

Memorial University Medical Center is laying off 228 workers in Savannah, Ga., as part of a reorganization.

Maximus to Lay Off up to 307 jobs in New York

Maximus could eliminate up to 307 jobs in New York City effective on or before Sept. 30, 2011.  The layoffs are about 5% of its total workforce of 6,500.

Maximus has contracts with the New York state Department of Health as a provider of Medicaid enrollment services. However, the state has not renewed its 4-year contract with the company, which is set to expire on Sept. 30, 2011.

Cisco Systems to Eliminate 6,500 Jobs

Cisco Systems, Inc., intends to cut 6,500 jobs companywide as part of efforts to lower costs. The layoffs are about 9% of its total workforce of about 70,700 as of Dec. 31, 2010.

Cisco is also selling its set-top box manufacturing facility in Juarez, Mexico, to Foxconn Technology Group.  The 5,000 employees at the Juarez facility will also be transferred to Foxconn.

CA Technoogies to Lay Off 500 Employees

CA Technologies intends to lay off 500 employees as part of its cost-cutting effort.  The layoffs constitute about 4% of its 1.400-strong total workforce.

The layoffs come despite the recent announcement that company earned $228 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2011, or 45 cents per share, compared with $221 million, or 43 cents per share, for the same period a year ago.

Borders Group to Close 399 Stores and Lay Off 10,700 Staff

Borders Group Inc. will eliminate 10,700 jobs and close down 399 stores across the U.S. as part of the company's liquidation.

As reported in the Troubled Company Reporter, liquidation is expected to commence for some Borders stores and facilities starting July 22, with a phased rollout of the program which is expected to conclude by the end of September.  Borders intends to liquidate under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code and as a result, it expects to be able to pay vendors in the ordinary course for all expenses incurred during the pendency of its bankruptcy cases.

Borders Group operates book, music and movie superstores and mall-based bookstores.  At Jan. 29, 2011, the Debtors operated 642 stores, under the Borders, Waldenbooks, Borders Express and Borders Outlet names, as well as Borders-branded airport stores in the United States, of which 639 stores are located in the United States and 3 in Puerto Rico.  In addition, the Debtors operate a proprietary e-commerce Web site, http://www.Borders.com/, launched in May 2008, which includes both in-store and online e-commerce components.  As of Feb. 11, 2011, Borders employed a total of 6,100 full-time employees, 11,400 part-time employees, and approximately 600 contingent employees.

BAX Global Inc. will close down its air hub at the Toledo Express Airport in Toledo, Ohio, affecting 700 employees.  The Company said that the closing is due to the phasing out its dedicated air fleet in the United States.  Bax Global will be switching its business model from operating its own air fleet to a non fixed-base model.

MultiCare Will Lay Off 350 Staff in Washington

ArchBrook Laguna to Close in New Jersey and Georgia and Lay Off 259 Workers

Manheim Auto Auction has laid off 96 jobs in Manheim, Pa., and closed its facility in Nashville, Tenn., and cut 127 jobs.

Manheim blamed the layoffs on the auction industry's switch to more Internet transactions instead of live auctions.  Manheim also decided to eliminate the second shift in its detailing shop in Manheim, Pa., because of a decline in institutional sales.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems to Lay Off 1,200 Workers

American Electric Power Company Will Close Five Plants and Lay Off 600

The American Electric Power Company, Inc., plans to close five plants in the U.S. and lay off 600 workers, as a result of new rules for coal-fired power plants proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA is proposing strict regulations to limit emissions of mercury, lead and other toxins from coal-fired plants could take effect in 3-1/2 years.  AEP deems the timeline as "unrealistic."  As a result, the company would have to close plants in Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia by the end of 2014 and retire generating units at plants in five states by the end of 2012.
